Woodcarving was one of the earliest human occupations. It remains popular and to this day. Some ancient examples have survived in arid climate of Egypt, for example, a wooden statue of Sheik-ale-Beled from Old Kingdom. In France woodcarving was also part of religious art, and to this day there carved altarpiece are widely known. The Italian woodcarving prospered during the Gothic period in Pisa, Siena and Florence.  By the end of XIX - beginning of XX century the dominant trend in wood carving becomes cut through carving. It was just what did external home decoration the most expressive. It was just what enabled to achieve the sophistication degree, which allows comparison with lace products, which we mentioned earlier.
In relation to household items the most practical was products (including kitchen) turning which were decorated by geometrical, relief or contour carving. Primitive lathes applied at first now have turned to compact high-efficiency products which gave the chance to the carver to receive perfect template for its decorating.

Historically developing, art wood processing along with carving gradually began to be enriched by color. Carvings tincturing, and then and then painting embellishment of various wooden items has led to folk art centers formation where painting became mainstream of their activity. Necessity to improve some kinds of wood or to disguise its natural defects (log blue, snubs, etc.) was one of the reasons of coloring and painting introduction in wood subjects.

Masters achieve art conceptions variety, in particular, by the way of metal introduction (a notch technician), connection different in color and texture of the wood (inlay technique), drawing or background burning out underlining pattern silhouette.
Every year the woodcarving as the art form prospers and develops, but in each country in its own way, reflecting and combining its cultural values and rich heritage of ancestors.
